1938. Madrid beat FC Barcelona, its historic rival, and won its seventh Cup. The game ended 2-1.

1956. For the first time in the club history, the team won the European Cup. The game was played against Stade Reims from france and ended 4-3 for the meringues.


1957. Second European Cup. This time the game was against an Italian team. Real Madrid beat Fiorentina 2-0 and won the European Cup. In addition, the same year it also won the fifth League.

The new Chamartín stadium


December 14th, 1947 is a significant date in FC Real Madrid history, since that day the new Chamartín Stadium was founded. The opening of the stadium represented an important sports event at that time and the international press described the stadium as the best in Europe.


Sabino Barinaga was the first player to score in the new stadium. The debut game was against Os Belenenses and ended with the triumph of the locals by 3-1.


Santiago Bernabéu, president


Santiago Bernabéu was born on June 8th, 1895 and died on June 2nd, 1978. Besides being a football player and president of Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, he is the longest-running president of the Club, reaching a 35-years period.


During Bernabéu’s presidency, Real Madrid won 16 Spanish Leagues, 6 Spanish Cups and 6 European Cups. These national and international achievements established Real Madrid as one of the most important football clubs worldwide.


Honoring his effort, dedication and years of hard work in the club, the stadium received the name of this man who gave so much to the institution and the people of Madrid. By doing this, Santiago Bernabeu’s name will always be remembered.


50th Anniversary


On March 6th, 1952, the club celebrated its 50 years anniversary and commemorated the it with several social events and an international sports event.


The sports event was an international tournament with different teams. The winning team was the Millonarios, a team from Argentina that had one player who then became one of the greatest players and scorers in the history of Real Madrid - Alfredo di Stefano.


The performance and skills of Alfredo di Stéfano surprised fans of Real Madrid, and managers quickly started negotiations so that this excellent Argentinean player could be part of the club. A year after the historic game during the 50th anniversary, di Stéfano became part of the team, and would later become a huge football legend, considered one of the best football players in the world during the 20th century. Today, he is the honorary president of Real Madrid.
